I don't know about you but honestly, I used to be very scared of this giant PREPOSITION . But now, believe me, or not, it's just a piece of cake for me. So, I thought of sharing what helped me with you.
"let's learn together"
Definition: "Preposition is a word that links a noun or pronoun to other parts of the sentence" balaa balaa balaa..."
You must have read these types of definitions in your notebooks but I have nothing to do with these definitions. I want you to make your one after knowing fully what this GIANT preposition is. Before heading further into a concept or phenomenon, it is always helpful to examine the term defining it. so the same we are going to do with the concept of prepositions.
Just look at the word 'PREPOSITION' it seems to be derived from two PRE and POSITION. You all are familiar with the word POSITION which means the location of something or where a thing is kept. and I am pretty sure that you are also aware of the word PRE... if not, you will be, as it means before.
So,
□ PRE ➡️ before
□ POSITION ➡️ location /place.
The term PREPOSITION refers to those words which are used in a sentence before the place of the sentence to tell categorically at which point of place the noun or pronoun of the sentence is present.
"Let's take an example"
THE BOOK IS ON THE TABLE
Here,
Book ➡️ Noun
Table ➡️ the Place about which our noun, (Book) is present
On ➡️ is the word which is exactly telling that the book is placed upon the surface of table_neither above, nor below or side-wise.
"Let's take another example"
HE IS AT 32 Street.
He ➡️ Pronoun
32 Street ➡️ the place about which pronoun (he) is present and
AT ➡️ is the word which is exactly telling that the pronoun (he) is present at 32 Street neither near nor around it.
Preposition covers a wide range of words. some of them are, at, on, in, from, to, by, about, behind, within, across, etc. I know you have a big problem of where to use which preposition like I used to have but now, I have resolved my problem and don't you worry because I am gonna help you too to abolish this problem and make it crystal clear where to use which preposition. So, stay on this page till the end.
"LET'S LEARN TOGETHER AND CLEAR OUR MINDS"
Now, let's began the fun.
1) IN: In preposition is used when the noun/pronoun is at a place that is covered by its sides but the noun/pronoun is visible to the writer.
EXAMPLE :
A) The Ball is IN the Box.
B) Naveed is IN the Classroom.
2) INSIDE: Inside preposition is used when noun or pronoun is present at a place which is covered from all sides and noun is invisible to the speaker.
EXAMPLES:-
A) The Ball is INSIDE the Box.
B) Hania is INSIDE the Classroom.
(note: here Sara is invisible to the speaker because either the door is closed or the speaker is far from the classroom and the box is fully packed cannot see the ball inside the box)
□ 3) ON: On preposition is used when the noun or pronoun is present upon the surface of the place which is usually not enclosed.
EXAMPLES:
A) Ball is ON the Box.
B) Javed is standing ON the roof of Classroom.
4) AT: At is used when a noun or pronoun is present in such a place which is mentioned as a point of place with its proper name and not as a surface in general.
FOR EXAMPLE:
A) His ball is at the park.
B) Shahzaib is at School.
5) UNDER: Under is used when our noun or pronoun is present below the place but not in touch with it and place is wholly covering it.
FOR EXAMPLE:
A) Ball is UNDER the table.
B) Esra is UNDER an Umbrella.
6) OVER: Over preposition is just opposite to Under. It is used when noun or pronoun is present above the place but does not touch it. It is also used when something fully covers the noun or pronoun.
FOR EXAMPLE:
A) Ball is hanging OVER the Box.
B) Ahmed is flying in a parachute OVER the river.
C) Umer puts her hands OVER her Ears.
7) ENTER: Enter is used when Noun or pronoun comes inside the place by making any movement. i.e Noun was outside, then it started a movement and came inside the place where it stopped.
FOR EXAMPLE:
A) The Ball ENTERED the Box.
B) Nomi ENTERED the Classroom.
